Perfectionism & The Two Ways I Moved Past It

Perfectionism & The Two Ways I Moved Past It

Hi Bookworms!

Today I wanted to talk to you about perfectionism and share with you the two ways I was able to overcome it in my life.  No doubt Elizabeth Gilbert’s Big Magic had a ton to do with it, which launched my video and book club endeavor.  Let’s get to it.

Watch the video now or see the transcription below.

Perfectionism on the surface is a list of all the things that need to happen in order for x or y to occur.  An unattainable standard, self-created to keep you safe and warm.  Indeed, it’s main purpose is to protect us, it protects us from being vulnerable and actually sharing ourselves with ourselves and the world.  It keeps us where we are, it makes us stuck, it leaves us in our comfort  zone.

At the root perfectionism is fear of not being good enough.  Which we know is bull shit so here are two things I have done in the past to move past it.

  • Recognize it for what it is.  Often times calling out perfectionism will do the trick.  When you admit why you have set up all those rules and standards they fall away.
  • Another trick is to allow yourself to be a beginner.  We all start somewhere.  Remember our first virtual meet up together?  It was an hour too long!  This video is less then 4 minutes.  Over the last year I have been working on shortening my time so that we can all get back to our lovely lives.

There you have it folks. I hope this served you!
